For Business Travelers, Some Cost-Saving Tips

Business travel costs are expected to rise this year, and Barbara Weltman, creator of the online newsletter “Big Ideas for Small Business,” has ideas for saving money and avoiding travel hassles.
* Use teleconferencing. Teleconferencing is easy to arrange, more economical and less time-consuming today than travel, and can be used to address a large number of people.
* Consider alternative transportation. An Amtrak ride may be quicker than flying. If you’re planning a business trip that would take more than four or five hours by car, fly instead of driving.
* Schedule better. List all the service calls you plan to make, then plot out your route so you’ll travel the shortest distance possible.
* Limit the scope of your business. Decide whether the extra cost of travel is justified by the revenue you gain from the business you get while traveling.
