Recession Brings Obstacles, Opportunities For Small Businesses

A recession can be particularly tough for small businesses that lack the resources of larger companies with staff members who can research and analyze the economic conditions and figure out their next steps.
That’s why we checked in with members of The Patriot Ledger’s Economic Advisory Panel to seek their advice on what small businesses should be doing right now to prepare for the downturn.
Many of the local experts say local businesses should be cautious, particularly about expansion efforts and taking on extra debt. If small businesses rely heavily on debt, they should consider scaling back that reliance.
Employee relations is also something that small businesses need to take seriously, particularly as their employees deal with their own financial headaches. It’s particularly important in rough economic times for managers of small businesses to remind their workers of their importance to the company’s success and reward them for their loyalty when possible.
Likewise, maintaining good customer relations is key to a small company’s success during an economic rough patch. Small businesses should be figuring out the best ways to address the needs of their customers, regardless of whether they are individual consumers or other businesses.
Lastly, small business owners need to remember that there are plenty of opportunities for success during an economic downturn. They shouldn’t just allow a bunker mentality to take hold in the way they manage the business. Instead, they should be strategizing new directions for the business, particularly so they are poised for economic growth once the inevitable economic recovery takes hold. Read more.
